Talk Story In Hawaii For Real Treat
The Roosevelt High School graduate moved back to Hawaii in 2016 where she joined KHON2 (FOX) as the Weekend Weather Anchor and morning news reporter on WakeUp2Day. Let’s work together to create accurate, reliable, and culturally competent resources for celebrating APIA and AIAN communities. You might have noticed that on Thursdays, we often ask questions and encourage dialogue. We have so much to learn from each other, whether it be travel tips or ways to find your aloha.
You will remember the sand beneath your toes, the sun melting your reality away, and just for a moment, you’ll breathe and remember that aloha feeling. The president-elect used a softer tone when discussing Dreamers, those who arrived in the U.S. nearly 20 or more years ago as children and are covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that has allowed them to remain in the country and work legally. Welker also asked about the zero-tolerance policy during Trump’s first term, where families would be separated at the border as a means of deterrence for those who chose to enter the U.S. illegally.

Benjamin Kuti, a soft-spoken young man, had a difficult childhood, often without his mother present. The other men agree this wouldn’t work, but all recognise the sense of isolation their physical appearance can create. This mentoring weekend, offered by the charity Oak London, is an opportunity for these men to release some of that poison. They throw a ball around the room to indicate whose turn it is to speak.
- I may also use Talk Story for giving the backstory for the particular post.
- Skattebo had a breakthrough senior season, rushing for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns while catching 37 passes for 506 yards and three touchdowns.
- Host Sandy Swift interviewed Kuʻuipo Kumukahi in March of 2001 at KKCR’s studio, Princeville Hawaiʻi.
- His lifelong appreciation of Miles Davis’ collaborations with arranger Gil Evans on the albums Porgy And Bess (1959) and Sketches Of Spain (1960) continually inspired him to push his own envelope in the creative sense.
Since the earliest of times, people of all cultures have used stories to help them explain a practice, belief or natural phenomenon. In this series, we explore the importance of traditional storytelling across various cultures. In addition to Spirit Of Eden’s radical change of direction, Hollis had also decreed that Talk Talk would be retiring from live performance. For their final few years, the band effectively became Hollis and Friese-Greene’s studio project, though drummer Lee Harris still made a decisive contribution to Talk Talk’s final album, 1991’s Laughing Stock, released by legendary jazz imprint Verve.
McKenna Maduli is the creator and host of the Emmy Award-winning “Talk Story with McKenna Maduli,” a weekly Hawaiian variety show that airs on Hawaii News Now (KHNL/KGMB) in Honolulu. The show is a realization of her life-long dream to uplift Hawaiʻi through the lens of media. Talk Story celebrates Hawaiʻi’s diverse entertainment landscape by highlighting island talent in music, fashion, art, hula and Hawaiian culture. “After twenty years on the mainland, I am incredibly blessed to be able to be back home, sharing the stories of Hawai’i through our talented people and culture,” Maduli said. “I’ve been rejected, failed, succeeded, learned and made many mistakes – all building my path back to Hawai’i, where I feel the most authentically connected to the stories.” Legends were a way of documenting history, knowledge, facts and beliefs from generation to generation.
But, he said, he is open to working with Democrats to pass legislation that would ensure Dreamers — undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children — would be able to remain in the country. President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that “you have no choice” but to deport everyone who is illegally in the U.S., including possibly removing the American citizen family members of those deported. “You know, get my name out on the stage a little bit more. I don’t feel like publicity is bad, especially if you’re not saying anything.

As Elbow’s Guy Garvey noted in Chris Roberts, James Marsh and Toby Benjamin’s book, Spirit Of Talk Talk, both Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock are “stunningly intricate works of breathtaking imagination, generosity of spirit and timeless art”. Once again the product of lengthy, improvised studio sessions overseen by Phill Brown and later edited down to a more palatable 43 minutes by Hollis and Friese-Greene, Laughing Stock was a logical extension of Spirit Of Eden. Opening with 15 seconds of amplifier hiss, it was largely stark and Talk Story minimal in design, though it included moments of sublime beauty, not least on the bewitching New Grass, which remains one of the best Talk Talk songs.
It is performed for storytelling or for religious and ceremonial purposes. Dancers are adorned with bark cloth, coconut fibres and native grasses, plants and ferns. Hula shares traditional stories as well as mythology and creation tales, including those of the gods and goddesses of the islands. People in Hawaii love to chat — so much so that they have a special term for it called talk story. If you have the chance to talk story when you are in Hawaii, seize it!
Trump’s comments about his mass deportation plan, a key promise of his presidential campaign, were the most expansive since he won the election in November. The program, he said, will begin with undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes and then advance to “people outside of criminals.” He did not detail which crimes would be included. Trump also said he will move to end birthright citizenship — long enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution — which would strip rights from those born in the country to undocumented parents. “We’ve got a quarterback who believes he’s really, really good, is one of the best in the country — if not the best in the country,” Arroyo said. “Believes he’s going to play on Sundays. Believes in everything he does. It’s when the microphone was in front of him that he got a chance to let everybody know that, and that’s OK.
“My idea is that a band should be able to develop constructively, like Bowie,” he told Sounds, while in an NME feature he stated that he wanted to “write stuff that you’ll be able to listen to in ten years’ time”. The Party’s Over helped establish Talk Talk, but Hollis remained unhappy with the band’s synth-based sound and the assumptions it led many to make about the group. Following the album’s release and tour cycle, an important personnel change significantly altered their course. Simon Brenner departed, and while he wasn’t officially replaced, Hollis recruited Tim Friese-Greene to help with the recording of Talk Talk’s second album, 1984’s It’s My Life. Hollis’ nascent talent was immediately apparent on I Can’t Resist, the lone single The Reaction recorded for Island Records, in 1978. An urgent slice of well-executed power-pop, it remains a fine vehicle for Hollis’ tremulous vocals, but, despite the band’s heavy gigging schedule, it sank without trace on release and The Reaction split as a result.
